In 2011, grain production in Azerbaijan will exceed the last year index by 450-500 thsd tonnes, informed Sabir Veliyev, head of the department of plant growing and seed production of the Ministry of Agriculture of Azerbaijan.
The growth of production will allow covering the major part of the needs of the population in bread and bakery products at the expense of the domestic production, added S.Veliyev. He stressed that the main task is to increase wheat production and satisfy the needs of the population in domestic products.
S.Veliyev noted that last year agrarians sowed grains throughout the areas of 915 thsd ha. According to him, the experts were concerned about the dry autumn, but the recent increase in rainfall changed the situation in a positive way.
To date the country can not completely meet the needs of the population in grains. Only in 2009 Azerbaijan produced 10.3 mln tonnes of grains, which fully met the needs of the population. But last year aggravation of the weather conditions caused much damage to agriculture. Therefore, the need of the population in the domestic grains was granted by 60% only, S.Veliyev said.
