In 2010, Ukraine to harvest sunflower seed at the previous year level
In the current year, sunflower seed production in Ukraine will possibly total nearly 6.4 mln tonnes, which almost corresponds to the previous year level, declared Stepan Kapshuk, the General Director of the Association "Ukroliyaprom", on August 26. According to him, the average yield index will total 14.4 c/ha.
At the same time, the head of the Association marked that agrarians of the country continue the present harvesting campaign, and the future production volumes will heavily depend on the rates of the harvesting works.
According to data of the Association "Ukroliyaprom", the share of Ukraine in the world sunflower production totals nearly 20%. The Association expects that qualitative parameters of the new crop oilseed will not lower compared to the last year results.
S.Kapshuk also informed that to date, the industrial capacities of Ukraine for oilseed processing total 9.7 mln tonnes per year, and the index will reach the level of 10 mln tonnes per year till the end of 2010.
According to the head of the Association, Ukraine has to keep the acting export duties for sunflower seed, because the possible cancellation of the duties (as the European Union requires during the negotiations for creation of the free trade zone with Ukraine) will cause losses at the level of nearly 1.5 bln UAH in the country.
According to data of the State Statistics Committee of Ukraine, in 2009 the country produced 6.36 mln tonnes of sunflower seed, down 2.5% compared to 2008.
