Imports of pig fat (lard) for the last five years has increased by 30%
In 2013 Ukraine has imported 44.4 ths t of pig fat (lard) that is 30% more than five years ago. It was informed by the Association "Ukrainian Agribusiness Club” (UCAB).
Last year, pork production in Ukraine has grown up by 9.1%. Consequently, imports of pork has reduced by 31%. However, the increasing in pork production has not contributed to the reduction of pig fat imports. In 2013, Ukraine has imported 44.4 ths t of pig fat, that is by 4.2% exceeds the figures of the previous year. In monetary terms, imports of pig fat has made 67,7 mln USD. Mostly, it was imported from Poland – 62%, namely 27 ths t and Germany – 34% (15,2 ths t). Small shipments were done from the Netherlands, Belgium, Hungary and Spain.
"Import growth of pig fat happens because of decreasing of its production in Ukraine in result of reducing the number of sebaceous breeds due to reorientation of enterprises for growing meat breeds of pigs. This year the import of lard may be slightly decreased in result of hryvnia devaluation, because at this exchange rate imported lard becomes quite expensive" - said Alina Zharko, Expert on agricultural markets of UCAB.
