Grain stocks in Ukraine exceed the last year volumes, exports should be immediately opened - S.Stoyanov

According to the State Statistics Committee of Ukraine, as of May 1, 2011, grain stocks at processing and agricultural enterprises total 8.3 mln tonnes, an increase of almost 8% or 0.6 mln tonnes compared to the same date of 2010, when the export trading was realized in free mode. During May-June of 2010 Ukraine exported nearly 1.8 mln tonnes of grains only, including 0.7 mln tonnes of wheat and barley, and 0.4 mln tonnes of maize. In such terms of grain exports in May-June period as of July 1, 2010, carry-over stocks of grains in such enterprises formed a volume of nearly 5 mln tonnes, reported the informational center of Ukrainian Agrarian Confederation.

There are no grounds to believe that if the Government cancels limitations on grain exports to date, the volume of exports by the end of the marketing year will exceed the same indices of the last year, which means that in the terms of nearly constant domestic demand in grains, there is nothing to fear for the carry-over stocks of grains in the current year. The export positions of Ukrainian exporters in the corresponding period last year were much better: they were supported by contracts and funding, placing of grains in the port terminals, transportation plans. But in the current year maize export trading just begins to unfolding, and wheat and barley export trading is still banned, as of May 17.

So, the Government has to immediately cancel the ban on wheat and barley exports that are essential for extricating of grain storage capacities and their preparation for reception of grains of the new harvest, and create opportunities for producers to sell surplus grain volumes, especially maize and wheat, and receipt of funds for completion of sowing works and realization of the harvesting campaign-2011, informed Sergey Stoyanov, General director of Ukrainian Agrarian Confederation.
