EU buys US soyabeans after GMO decision: Oil World

European Union oilseed crushers are resuming purchases of US soyabeans after the EU approved imports of maize with genetically-modified organisms (GMOs), Hamburg-based oilseeds analysts Oil World said on Tuesday. This summer, over 200,000 tonnes of soyabean and soyameal were refused entry to EU ports as they contained small amounts of GMO corn (maize) varieties not approved in Europe, virtually stopping large-scale EU imports of US soyabeans.

The EU authorised three types of GMO corn in late October but importers were not expected to resume large-scale US soya imports until the EU also approved imports of the fourth GMO maize type MIR604 from Swiss group Syngenta. But some EU soya imports had resumed following the maize approval, although European crushers were still largely focusing on other oilseeds, Oil World said.
