Egypt buys almost $1.5 b worth of Ukrainian grain in 2012

Ukraine exported about 5.6 million tons of grain worth over $1.4 billion to Egypt in 2012.

Ukraines Special Representative for the Middle East and Africa Hennadiy Latiy said this at a conference in Kyiv on Thursday, a Ukrinform correspondent reported.

Total exports of Ukrainian grain to Egypt amounted to 5.6 million tons worth $1.4 billion, Latiy said.

The diplomat noted that African countries had in recent years remained the only suppliers of exclusive raw materials required for Ukraines production capacities, as well as the importers of a wide range of Ukrainian products, including high-tech products. At the same time, Ukraine has a surplus of bilateral trade with most countries on the African continent.

As Ukrinform reported, Ukrainian Agricultural Policy and Food Minister Mykola Prysiazhniuk said on August 14 that Ukraine has every chance of becoming the worlds second-largest grain exporter after the United States, taking a 10% share in world trade in grain. In particular, East Asia plans to buy 60 million tons of grain this year, the Middle East - 40 million tons, and North Africa - 33 million tons.
