EEC, Ukraine sign memorandum on deepening cooperation
The Eurasian Economic Commission and Ukraine have signed a memorandum on expanding cooperation on 31 May. Taking part in the signing ceremony was Chairman of the Board of the Eurasian Economic Commission Viktor Khristenko and Prime Minister of Ukraine Nikolai Azarov. The signing ceremony took place during the SES business forum.
The same memorandum was signed with Kyrgyzstan.
BelTA reported earlier that Belarus, Russia and Kazakhstan decided to give Kyrgyzstan and Ukraine an observer status in the Eurasian Economic Union. The decision was made following a session of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council in Astana on 29 May. Kyrgyzstan had earlier submitted an application to join the Customs Union. A task force was set up to develop a roadmap for Kyrgyzstan’s accession to the Customs Union. Ukraine voiced intentions to get an observer status at the Customs Union/Single Economic Space and the future Eurasian Economic Union.
The memoranda signed on 31 May will give the right to representatives of Ukraine and Kyrgyzstan to get the invitation of the Chairman of the Council or the Chairman of the EEC Board to attend sessions without vote and to have an opportunity to take part in discussions and voice their views. They will also be able to put forward their proposals to be discussed by the Eurasian Economic Commission. The document formalizing the two countries’ observer status in the future Eurasian Economic Union is to be prepared by the next session of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council that will be held in Minsk in October 2013.
