Canada seeks to increase exports of canola to China
Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz discussed future Canadian canola oil exports to China during a recent meeting with Bao Kexin, the chief executive officer and president of Sinograin, China's state-owned organization responsible for national reserves of grains and edible oil.
Minister Ritz assured Sinograin that Canadian farmers have the capacity to produce a consistent supply of canola and new canola crushing plants are dramatically increasing the volume of canola oil available for export.
Minister Ritz provided assurances that the Canadian canola industry will work with Sinograin to deliver on its goal to secure consistent supplies of canola oil. Sinograin outlined its goal to increase Canadian canola oil imports by an additional 200,000 tonnes for a total of 350,000 tonnes in 2010. The Canola Council of Canada estimates these increased sales will be worth C$180 million.
