Australia's low-grade wheat finds an Asian market
Downgraded wheat from Victoria's Western District has found a niche market in South-East Asian flour mills.
Agfarm accounts manager Sam Heagney says the containerised wheat market has saved the grain from feed markets.
He says while the grain isn't great, with a decent protein level, mills can buy it and mix it with better quality grain.
"Whereas a lot of that grain would have just gone into the bulk handlers system and been drowngraded simply to feed, now with a bit of on-farm storage and other segregations, and a containerised market, there are a lot more opportunities for that grain," he says.
