Alcohol and sugar to be removed from free trade agreement
The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has submitted a draft law to exclude several categories of goods from the free trade agreement between Ukraine and Moldova. In particular, it concerns sugar and ethyl alcohol. This move is taken due to Ukraine's WTO obligations.
Moldova does not ship alcohol to Ukraine. According to the Customs Service, alcohol exports from Ukraine to Moldova amounted to 7,516 tons worth USD 6.80mn (EUR 4.68mn) in total in January-October. As a result of duties introduction, the cost of Ukrainian alcohol will rise and become less competitive in the Moldavian market. For example, the Tiraspol-based wine and brandy plant KVINT which purchases Ukrainian alcohol for industrial needs does not rule out the possibility to seek a new supplier in Russia or other states.
