AgriFood Spectrum: TOP 15 companies produce 30% of sorghum in Ukraine
According to the results of the study "AgriFood Spectrum of Ukraine-2014: Personal Profile" conducted by AgriSurvey agency, TOP 15 largest producers of sorghum produce one third of this crop in Ukraine.
In 2013, Ukraine produced 354.4 thousand tonnes of sorghum, which is by 70% more than in 2012. According to Agrisurvey, production growth resulted from almost double increase of yields while the acreage decreased by 11.5% compared with 2012.
“Despite the fact that sorghum is a niche crop, market of sorghum is quiet concentrated. The concentration ratio of TOP 15 largest producers accounted for 32.4% or 94 thousand tonnes of sorghum. Agriholdings are also active payers on the market of sorghum with the production volume of 108 thousand tonnes (37% of the total volume produced by agricultural enterprises)”, Taras Gagalyuk, the AgriSurvey’s Director says.
As per T. Gagalyuk, the production growth enabled increase of exports. With the global export volumes fluctuating around 5.5 million tonnes in the past five years, Ukraine managed to increase its share from 0.7% in 2010 to 3.3% in 2013. Growing global demand for sorghum is the result of its food and energy properties. In the US, Mexico and Brazil, sorghum is one of the major crops for bioethanol production.
