Agriculture ministry predicts this year's sugar output at 1.5 million tons
The Ukrainian Agriculture Ministry has forecast that farmers will harvest 12 million tons of sugar beets and produce 1.5 million tons of sugar this year, Deputy Agriculture Minister Ivan Demchak has said.
He said that the first three sugar plants would be put into operation in Vinnytsia and Poltava regions. A total of 60 sugar plants will operate in Ukraine this year.
Commenting on the situation with a rise in sugar prices, Demchak said that such a situation had been observed in the country almost every year.
According to the State Statistics Committee, sugar grew in price by over 40% in July 2009.
