The Ukrainian agrarian community calls for the swift adoption of the EU-Ukraine trade deal
The Ukrainian Agribusiness Club (UCAB), together with leading agricultural associations within the Ukrainian National Agrarian Forum (UNAF), the framework organization of the Ukrainian agricultural sector, call upon the EU Danish Presidency and the EU Member States to adopt without further delay the agricultural trade arrangement reached lately by the European Commission and Ukraine.
Indeed the deal falls short of expectations of the Ukrainian farmers, as a significant step back from the EU Autonomous Trade Measures (ATMs) framework of the past three years. Preliminary estimates indicate a loss of €900 mln from restricted access to the EU market, as well as additional losses from product redirection to third markets of up to €1.7 bln. These losses create additional pressure on Europe's only frontline state - the one where Ukrainian defenders fight every day for Ukrainian freedom and independence as well as for European values and freedoms. Therefore, the well-being of European farmers also depends on the resilience of Ukrainian farmers.
Yet the deal, if concluded swiftly and without further cuts, will send a strong signal of certainty and reassurance to Ukrainian agricultural producers and their partners, the European agriprocessing industries, from animal husbandry to food and beverages. Most importantly, we need to be certain that the application of this deal will not be jeopardized by individual trade restrictions by Member States, which undermine the integrity of the EU Internal Market, and put into doubt the very logic of Ukraine’s pre-accession reforms and alignment with EU legislation.
The time is high to demonstrate true solidarity and support for Ukraine in the area where the EU matters most: trade.
