8.853mn tons of grain transported by railways in H1 2009

Grain cargo transportation by Ukrainian railways totalled 8.853mn tons in H1 2009, against 4.43mn ons in the same period in 2008. According to the press-service of Ukrzaliznytsya, 7.907mn tons of cereals were exported, on the average 790 carriages-grain carriers per 24 hours. Grain transported for export totalled 2.183mn tons in H1 2008. Internal transportation fell 40%, to 946,200 tons in H1 2009, against H1 2008. This fact is explained by a rise of grain transportation for export and an increase of share of motor transport in shipment of cereals in the country. In general, Ukrainian railways transported 19.278mn tons of grain cargoes (wheat, barley, maize, rape and sunflower) of the harvest 2008 in the period from July 2008 until July 2009, including 16.819mn tons of them for export.
