A tree for a child in Haiti
FAO is asking people to lend a hand to children in Haiti by donating a fruit tree that they can plant in school yards across the country. The UN food agency’s Director-General, Jacques Diouf, will launch the «Fruit Trees for Haiti» initiative at a symbolic tree-planting at a school in the town of Croix des Bouquets, outside of Port-au-Prince, which while untouched by the earthquake is now playing host to tens of thousands of refugees from the capital.

State aid: the European Commission approves the aid granted to Farm Dairy Flevoland in the Netherlands
The European Commission has today decided that the aid granted in 1999 by the Dutch Province Flevoland to the undertaking Farm Dairy Flevoland is compatible with the State aid rules which applied when the aid was granted. The aid amounts to ˆ 715 000. The aid had been granted by the Province Flevoland as investment aid to the undertaking Farm Dairy Flevoland, located in Lelystad, which specialises in the production of bottled milk, yoghurts and other milk-based desserts.

FAO-African Virtual University agreement on e-learning
FAO and the African Virtual University (AVU) have signed a partnership agreement aimed at widening access to education and communications technologies in developing countries. The two organizations will share educational resources and integrate FAO e-learning courses in the AVU e-campus for Development and Peace.
