Sustainable farming: EESC to host seminar and exhibition

As «Alternatives to Pesticides Week» is in full swing, the European Economic and Social Committee will on March host a seminar and an exhibition on «integrated production», a farming scheme designed to produce safe and high quality food without using environmentally unfriendly and harmful chemicals. The EESC’s Section for Agriculture, Rural Development and the environment (NAT) will be hosting the seminar, which is co-organised with the Pesticides Action Network (PAN). Aimed primarily at discussing interplay between agricultural production and environmental protection, the seminar will host discussions of sustainability in farming, particularly in the context of a sweeping overhaul of the Common Agricultural Policy due to take place in the coming years.

Australia's stored wheat dips 9% in February

The Australian Bureau of Statistics reported on March 24 that at the end of February 2010, Australia's bulk storage of wheat grain was estimated at 15.6 million tonnes, 9% less than the amount stored at the same time in January.

Deere says new health care reform law will increase 2010 expense by $150 million after - tax

Deere & Company announced today that the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act signed into law this week will adversely impact its expenses for fiscal 2010. As a result of the legislation, the company’s expenses are expected to be about $150 million higher on an after-tax basis, primarily in the second quarter.

Canadian Federation of Agriculture pitches food strategy

Canada needs a «national food strategy» to ensure all Canadians have access to affordable, nutritious and safe food, says the head of the Canadian Federation of Agriculture. To that end, the CFA is proposing a plan that would support Canadian agriculture as the "multi-faceted, interlinked and sustainable’’ source of that food. Laurent Pellerin, president of the CFA, who spoke to the annual general meeting of the Agricultural Producers of Saskatchewan in Regina yesterday, said one-size-fits-all policies don’t work for Canadian producers.
