Winter weather promotes the 2010 grain production being at least stable
In December / February, intensive rains and snowfalls were registered all over the country, including arid Southern areas. In these areas we see substantially replenished soil moisture reserves, which were at a minimum in the fall. According to reports from Kirovohrad (Central Ukraine) 187-258 mm of precipitation fell in the Steppe zone this winter, i.e. 203-277% of normal rates. In the South, 166-193 mm of productive moisture was at the one-meter soil layer in late February. It was reported from Crimea that so high soil moisture content were registered only 3 times in Crimea over the last 45 years – in 1986, 1999, and 2006 – in these years we saw high grain yields in the region. Well-moistened soil is a very important positive factor contributing to grain production in 2010.
