Ukrainian economy has already recovered - IMF

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) believes that the Ukrainian economy has already recovered, IMF Resident Representative in Ukraine Max Alier said in Kyiv on Friday at the International Financial Stability Forum 2010 organized by Dagda.

He said that Ukraine should not rest on its laurels. The IMF noted several priorities that will help improve the country's economic situation. Among them are a reduction in the state budget deficit and a fall in the country's public debt. According to the IMF, Ukraine's public debt stood at 20% of GDP in 2008, 32-34% in 2009, and it is expected to reach 40-41% in 2010. "It's not a big debt, but not the same as it earlier was," the IMF resident representative in Ukraine said.

Among other factors required to improve the country's economic situation, Alier pointed to the recovery and development of the banking sector, in particular, its credit component. "According to the agreements reached in the framework of cooperation between the IMF and Ukraine, the government should complete the recapitalization of banks by the end of this year," he said.
