Ukraine to harvest 43-44.8 m tonnes of grain in 2011, say experts

Ukraine in 2011 could increase its grain harvest from last year's 39.3 million tonnes to 43-44.8 million tonnes, according to the market experts.

"We will harvest about 43-44 million tonnes this year, which is better than last year's figure," the director general of large agricultural company Ukrzernoprom Agro, Yevhen Lenh, said at the forum "Russia-Ukraine-Kazakhstan: at the start of a new grain year" in Kyiv on Thursday.

APK-Inform Analyst Anastasia Ivasenko believes that Ukraine this year could harvest 44.8 million tonnes. According to her, this figure will be reached if the weather for corn harvesting is favorable.

"According to recent estimates, the grain harvest in Ukraine could reach 44.8 million tonnes in weight after threshing mainly due to corn, if there is not a long spell of dry weather," she said at the forum.

In particular, the expert believes that the country could harvest 19.3 million tonnes of wheat, eight million tonnes of barley and 15 million tonnes of corn. Ukraine's export potential this marketing year (July 2011-June 2012) is estimated at 18.4 million tonnes, including eight million tonnes of wheat, 2 6 million tonnes of barley, and 7.5 million tonnes of maize.
