Ukraine to gather 15-16mln tons of sugar beet in 2009
The Agricultural Policy Ministry forecasts a sugar beet yield at 15-16 million tons in the current year and beet sugar production at 1.5 million tons.
'We hope that thanks to observation of technologies we will gather sugar beet at 15-16 million tons and 1.5 million tons of sugar", Agricultural Policy Minister Yuriy Melnyk told a press conference in Kyiv.
He underscored that it is a preliminary analysis that is based on a state of sowings and a size of sowing areas. According to the Ministry's tentative data, agrarians sowed 333 thousand ha of sugar beet in the current year out of the planned 350 thousand ha.
Despite reduction of the sowing area, the Minister is convinced in the absence of a deficit on the sugar market in the new season (September-2009/August - 2010).
"I am convinced that with taking into consideration the carry-over stocks of the produced sugar and sugar processing within the quota frames (cane-sugar) that will be as of September 1, we will have not a sugar deficit on the market", Melnyk underscored.
Ukraine produced 1.575 million tons of sugar from 2009 yield, 15.3% less against the previous season.
A gross yield of sugar beet in Ukraine reduced by 19.2% tо 13.7 million tons in Ukraine last year.
