Ukraine to consider grain export quotas next week

The government has postponed till the next meeting, August 25, the consideration of the imposition of quotas on grain exports, Deputy Minister of Agrarian Policy Serhiy Melnyk told reporters on Wednesday.

As reported, Agrarian Policy Minister Mykola Prysiazhniuk had said the Cabinet intends to restrict the export of grain till the end of 2010 to ensure food security.

It was planned that at its Wednesday's meeting the government would consider the volume of quotas agreed with the grain traders.

According Prysiazhniuk, the proposed quotas for exports (2.5 million tons for the period from September 1, 2010 to January 1, 2011, including 1 million tons of barley and 1.5 million tons of wheat) is higher than envisaged by the balance of grain production and consumption in Ukraine. September 1 this year is offered to set as the initial date for the quotas.

Total exports, according to the Ministry of Agrarian Policy, will be 6.2 million tons, almost the same performance for the balance.

Between July 1 and August 16, Ukrainian farmers have exported 2.69 million tons of grain. Of these, wheat is 1.1 million tons, barley - 1.2 million tons.

Prysiazhniuk also stressed that the introduction of quotas on grain exports amid a situation like this is allowed by the rules of the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the European Union.
