Ukraine. This year’s late spring may negatively influence winter crops
This year’s late spring may aggravate the adverse impact of the icy crust, which remains in many areas of Kharkiv, Poltava, Sumy, Cherkasy, Kyiv and some other regions, on winter crops. It should be noted that in 2003, when an icy crust killed 5.5 Ml ha, winter crops resumed their growth very late: on March 25 in the Steppe, on April 11 in the Forest-Steppe, and on April 17 in the Forest.
In total, the state of winter grains is currently assessed as good and satisfactory on 89% of areas and they can ensure a good grain harvest if properly cared for in spring. We expect that most winter crops will need protection against diseases and insect pests as well as herbicide treatment.
