Sugar exports from Ukraine this agricultural year (September 2011 – August 2012) will hit a record for the country at at least 150,000 tonnes, the Ukrtsukor national association of sugar producers has reported.

"We think that sugar exports will total at least 150,000 tonnes, while in the previous agricultural year it came to 6,200 tonnes," a source in the association has told Interfax-Ukraine.

According to Ukrtsukor, from September 2011 to June 2012, Ukraine supplied 118,300 tonnes of sugar to foreign markets, including 23,500 tonnes in June alone. The key buyers of Ukrainian sugar are Kazakhstan (83,000 tonnes), Georgia (8,900 tonnes), Kirgizstan (5,900 tonnes), Lebanon (4,450 tonnes), Uzbekistan (3,987 tonnes), Turkmenistan (3,400 tonnes) and Syria (2,400 tonnes).

According to the association, along with sugar exports growth Ukraine cut imports of sugar. Over the ten months of the agricultural year, the country imported 14,560 tonnes of sugar, while in 2010/11 agricultural year almost 290,000 tonnes was imported.

Earlier Ukrtsukor assessed the country's exports potential for 2011/12 agricultural year at 470,000 tonnes of beet sugar.

As earlier reported, Ukraine produced 2.33 million tonnes of sugar from sugar beets of the year 2011 harvest, against 1.54 million tonnes a year before.

The capacity of the Ukrainian sugar market is estimated at about 1.8-1.9 million tonnes a year.
