Ukraine harvests 43.3 million tons of grain, 6 million tons of sunflower seeds as of Oct. 23
Ukraine by October 23, 2009 had harvested 43.3 million tonnes of grain, which was 12.3% down on the same date last year, the Agriculture Ministry reported with reference to updates from the regions.
Grain crops were harvested from 14.6 million hectares, which is 94% of the forecast.
The average productivity of the crops this year is 29.6 centners per hectare, compared to last year's 35 centners per hectare.
Ukraine in particular harvested 21.6 million tonnes of wheat, 12.7 million tonnes of barley, 998,000 tonnes of rye, 524,000 tonnes of peas, and 5.6 million tonnes of maize – the harvesting of which is still under way.
Farmers also harvested six million tonnes of sunflower seeds from 3.9 million hectares (94% of the target). The average crop capacity of sunflower seeds in the current year is 15.4 centners her hectare, compared to 15.6 centners per hectare in 2008.
