Ukraine: exports - main driver of the grain infrastructure development

Taking into account that the domestic consumption of grains in Ukraine is likely to decline in future (due to the population decline), export shipments will become the major clue in the long term, stated Rodion Rybchinskiy, Head of the department of business projects of APK-Inform Agency, during his presentation at the international conference Grain Forum - 2011 in Yalta.

That is why, the expert believes that the export trading is the main engine of the infrastructure development of the grain industry of the country. R.Rybchinskiy added that the storage capacities of Ukraine do not provide the full needs of the market.

To date, in Ukraine there are 40 mln tonnes of grain storage tanks (industrial enterprises). The country's capacities for grain shipment total 36.4 mln tonnes.

The expert also noted the existing problem of uneven distribution of the storage capacities throughout the country territory, which leads to the fact that the supply of grain elevators throughout Ukraine represents 47% only.

According to forecasts, the general grain production in Ukraine in 2015 will reach the level of 55 mln tonnes. As a result, it is necessary to launch 16 mln tonnes of storage capacities, which will require about 3 bln USD of investments.
