Ukraine could be part of global food security program, says Azarov
Ukrainian Premier Mykola Azarov has said that Ukraine could be part of a global food security program.
"In 2010 a shortage of grain in the world would reach 60 million tonnes, and it's obvious that in the next ten years the world would face a shortage of food, while Ukraine potentially could produce over 100 million tonnes of grain, and we're able to be part of a global food security program," he said during talks with World Bank Vice President Inger Andersen on Friday.
He also proposed to the World Bank to increase its investment portfolio for Ukraine and realize the World Food Programme in Ukraine for the period of at least ten years.
In turn, Andersen said that the proposal of the Ukrainian government is of current importance. She said that international discussion on provision of stable development of the food market is very important.
She said that currently the drawing up of a new strategy of the World Bank for Ukraine has been started and the idea of the Ukrainian premier would be thoroughly studied.
