Ukraine and Russia to increase in grain production volumes in 2011? - Expert opinion

According to Abdolreza Abbassian, Senior economist and grain market analyst of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, in 2011 Russia and Ukraine will dramatically increase grain production volumes after the severe droughts last summer. Especially in Ukraine.

In Russia, grain production will increase compared to the last year results, but the increase might not be as significant as expected, due to lag of the the spring sowing rates.

It is worth recalling that according to the official indices, due to the drought the grain harvest in Russia last year totaled 61 mln tonnes in clean weight, and in Ukraine - 39 mln tonnes. The most recent forecast of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation marked the general grain production in 2011 at the level of 85 mln tonnes. The forecast of the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine for the harvest in 2011 is not so optimistic - 42 mln tonnes. At the same time, according to analysts of APK-Inform Agency, grain production in Ukraine will be 43 mln tonnes in the negative development of weather and climate conditions, and under favorable - 48 mln tonnes, in Russia - 76-88 mln tonnes, under appropriate conditions.
