Ukraine. Agrarian Policy Ministry sticks with its forecast for winter crop plantings in 2010
The Agrarian Policy Ministry of Ukraine stuck with its forecast for planting of winter grains in 2010. “Of 8.4 Ml ha of winter crops we planned, 6 Ml ha is already sown. We plant roughly 300-310 Th ha a day. So, we are not worried at all about the plans for planting of winter crops,” said Ag Minister Mykola Prysiazhniuk at a government meeting held in Kyiv on Monday. The Minister previously reported that Ukraine had planted 5.4 Ml ha of winter crops as of October 1. Ukraine planted 10.1 Ml ha of winter crops, including rape, for the 2010 harvest, i.e. almost 3% more than in 2008. In particular, the acreage under winter grains expanded by 3.7% to 8.6 Ml ha. Winter wheat areas totaled almost 6.7 Ml ha (+ 2.6%) and barley areas almost 1.6 Ml ha (+ 25.4%).
