On May 5, Nazar Bobitskyi, Head of the UCAB EU office, participated in the annual congress of the European Association of Sugar Manufacturers (CEFS), joining a panel discussion dedicated to EU–Ukraine relations.

This event provided an important opportunity to communicate the key positions of the Ukrainian sugar industry to European partners. During the discussion, UCAB, together with the National Association of Sugar Producers of Ukraine "Ukrtsukor", presented the following key messages:

• Access to the EU market has been a lifeline: Ukraine’s sugar industry traditionally exported to markets outside of Europe. However, Russia’s full-scale invasion has completely changed the landscape, making access to the EU market essential for the industry's survival.
• Ukrainian sugar has effectively become an integral part of the EU’s sugar balance. In 2022, it played a crucial role in preventing shortages and stabilizing prices. Therefore, even after the war ends, Ukraine should remain a strategic partner for the European market, while also reengaging with global markets.
• Challenges of adaptation and overcoming outdated stereotypes: Ukrainian producers share the concerns of their European colleagues regarding increased regulation under the European Green Deal. Ukrainian farmers are already facing adaptation challenges as they prepare for EU accession.
• However, the stereotype of “cheap” Ukrainian sugar is long outdated. With the prospect of future EU membership, Ukraine’s sugar industry — which has historically focused on global markets — is now facing a number of serious challenges.

“The EU integration process must be built on fair and balanced foundations. Tariff quotas under the DCFTA cannot serve as a strong basis for the sustainable development of the sector,” added Nazar Bobitskyi.
