Romania. Wheat, maize exports remain strong in December
Wheat, maize exports remained strong in December – at 123.4 thousand tonnes and 98.8 thousand tonnes respectively, in December. Average export prices were EUR 127 per ton and EUR 164 per ton respectively. The main destinations for the exports of wheat were Spain and Italy, but also Greece, Israel and Egypt. More than 25% of the maize exports were shipped to Portugal and UK each, while important amounts were also delivered to Greece.
Wheat exports in H2 2008 reached 1.13mn tonnes, in spite of the traders and bakers warning of imminent imports on the back of insufficient (5.4mn tonnes) crop last year. However, the exports were rather small compared to those in the past marketing year that followed the record 7.2mn tonnes in 20008. For the whole 2009 year, the exports were 2.3mn tonnes – and the net exports were 1.9mn tonnes. The exports of maize were only 649 thousand tonnes in H1, or 1.63mn tonnes in full year, in spite of the large structural production surplus (production well in excess of domestic demand).
