Kazakhstan: as of August 1, grain carry-over stocks totaled 2.98 mln tonnes

According to the Agency of Statistics of the Republic of Kazakhstan, as of August 1, 2011, the carry-over stocks of grains in Kazakhstan totaled 2.978 mln tonnes, a decrease of 14% compared to the beginning of last month.

On August 1 last year Kazakhstan the carry-over stocks exceeded the current volume by over 2 times, or up 3.147 mln tonnes. Thus, grain stocks on August 1, 2011, totaled 48.6% of the grain volume of the last year.

In the current year in Kazakhstan the carry-over stocks of wheat, maize, rye and buckwheat decreased by 2 times, oats and millet – down 3 times, and rice – down one third. Barley volumes formed 19.6% of the last year volumes, which totaled nearly 0.5 mln tonnes.

Barley volumes essentially decreased due to reduction of the sowing areas in 2010, and extremely low prices for barley in the autumn and winter of 2009 -10 years. As a result of low prices, many grain producers refused to produce barley.

In the spring, as a result of increasing the demand for barley as forage crop, many agrarians again increased their sowings of barley.
