In August 2009, Ukrainian ports stopped decreasing cargo flow volumes

In August 2009, the majority of ports of Ukraine managed to stop the tendency of the fall of cargo flow volumes. The situation became more stabilized compared to previous months. But, the ports still do not show growing tendencies, declared Nikholay Pavluk, the head of Odessa port.

According to him, the Odessa port falls behind from the last year indices bv 3 mln tonnes, but plans to reach the index of 32-32.5 mln tonnes at the end of the year, down 2 mln tonnes compared to the record indices of 2008 (shipment volumes totaled 34.5 mln tonnes).

During last months, Ukrainian ports provided the rotation of strategic ports: previously, products of the metallurgical and chemical industries dominated among the commodities of the cargo flow, but now grain products took the dominating position. Many ports of Ukraine provided grain exports, during the year. The exports of the last year harvest continued till July, when 2008/09 MY ended.

According to the data of the association “Ukrport”, Ukrainian ports shipped nearly 22 mln tonnes of grains. Many ports declared about own plans to construct new or additional grain terminals (Berdyansk, Belgorod-Dnestrovsk, Evpatorya and etc.).

According to N.Pavluk, to date, grain cargoes completely cover the lost volumes of transit. According to the State Statistics Committee, during six months of 2009, the fall of transit cargo flow through the ports of Ukraine totaled 24%.
