Government agrarian policy should be more effective - President Yushchenko

President Viktor Yushchenko believes that the government agrarian policy in 2010 should be more effective and it should envisage an adequate budgetary support and creation of economic stimuli for the strategic sector of Ukraine, he said this in Kharkiv region at a meeting with the agrarians.

Yushchenko underlined that agriculture is a traditional sector for Ukraine, which amid favorable global price environment for foodstuffs is capable of recovering the country from the crisis.

In his opinion, this requires a comprehensive agrarian policy that would create opportunities for the development of agrarian production. Infrastructure development, namely transport and elevators, is needed there. The same concerns the tariff policy that should make the Ukrainian products competitive on the foreign markets.

A precondition for the sector development, according to Yushchenko, is first of all a refusal from the attempts of an administrative regulation the government has repeatedly resorted to.

He called inadequate, especially in the administrative pricing for the sector products, a budgetary support to agro-industrial sector, in particular, underfunding for compensations and grants to farm producers.

Yushchenko also called on the agrarians to be more active in developing the government agrarian policy and present a list of their requirements to the government.
