Cabinet forecasts poorer wheat harvest in some Ukrainian regions due to bad weather

The harvest of winter and spring wheat in some regions of Ukraine could be poorer than expected due to bad weather in late June and early July, according to First Vice Premier and Economic Development and Trade Minister Andriy Kliuyev.

"It is forecasted that the winter and spring wheat harvest will worsen in Kirovohrad, Cherkasy, Kyiv, Odesa, Mykolaiv, Vinnytsia and Dnipropetrovsk regions," he said, opening a Wednesday cabinet meeting.

Kliuyev does not rule out that the expected losses of wheat will be compensated for by a better gross corn harvest.

According to tentative data from the Ukrainian Agricultural Policy and Food Ministry, as of July 5, 2011, Ukraine harvested 2.1 million tonnes of grain from 752,000 hectares, or 7% of its fields. The average yield in Ukraine is 28.1 centners per hectare, against 24.6 centners per hectare in 2010.

As reported, the Agrarian Policy and Food Ministry forecasts that Ukraine will harvest 45 million tonnes of grain in 2011, compared to 39.3 million tonnes in 2010.
