Bulgaria doubled its grain export against the background of the embargo put by Russia and Ukraine

The volume of Bulgarian wheat and barley export doubled this year after Russia and Ukraine had banned grain exports, said Radoslav Hristov, president of Bulgaria’s Grain Producers Association.

“Wheat prices rose by 50% in the Black Sea region after Russia and Ukraine had ceased grain shipments. Such new importers as Israel and South Korea contributed to greater demand,” said Hristov.

During this summer, Bulgaria shipped abroad roughly 600 KMT of new crop wheat and roughly 300 KMT of barley. According to the Agriculture Ministry, the 2010 crop approximated 3.7 MMT of wheat and 780 KMT of barley. This year’s wheat export is expected to reach 1.6 MMT against 1.1 MMT registered last year.
The bulk of grains is shipped to Italy, Spain, Egypt, Syria, Iran and Vietnam.

“The strong international demand for barley has actually emptied our warehouses. This year’s domestic demand was very low because cattle raisers and brewers made few purchases,” noted Hristov.
