100,000 tons of sugar may be imported

Ukraine's Agricultural Policy Minister Mykola Prysiazhniuk does not rule out the possibility of importing about 100,000 tons of sugar this year to compensate for the domestic deficit.

In the minister's words, the shortage of sugar until the end of the current season (September 2009 - August 2010) makes 200,000 - 250,000 tons. He believes it will be possible to partially cover the deficit at the cost of the import of raw cane sugar within the framework of the quota set for the current season.

In the words of Prysiazhniuk, raw sugar is being already imported and processed, which has led to a certain fall in the home prices for it.

"The prices of sugar in March and April will be falling, because we have launched interventions with cane sugar," the minister said.

In keeping with Ukraine's obligations to the World Trade Organization, a quota of 267,000 tons was set on the import of cane sugar to this country in 2010.
