Production of skimmed milk increases by 52%

Production of skimmed milk increases by 52%

According to the State Statistics Service, in Ukraine the production of skimmed milk powder reached over 27 thousand tons in the first half of 2014, showing a rise of 52% as compared to the corresponding figure in the previous year. This was reported by the Association “Ukrainian Agribusiness Club” (UCAB).

As a consequence of the complex trade relations with Russia, over the last years there has been a certain reorientation of dairy products production: decrease in cheese production and growth in production of other dairy products. This year relations with Russia got complicated and already in early April the export of cheese was prohibited by Russia for a number of the ukrainian enterprises. As a result, the reorientation process in dairy products production had accelerated its pace considerably.

The production of fat cheeses for the first six months decreased by 18.5% compared to the same period in 2013 and came to 66 thousand tons. However, there was a growth in the production of other dairy products, first of all, it concerned butter and skimmed milk powder. The production of oil in the first half year increased by 34% - up to 55.8 thousand tons. Along the production of dairy products its export had been being increased. The main export markets for milk powder are Kazakhstan, Russia, Bangladesh, Nigeria, Egypt and others.

"It is known, since the 28th of July export of the ukrainian dairy products has been entirely banned by Russia to be exported to her market. Thus, the reorientation of dairy products production and diversification of product markets would last further. As an additional opportunity for this sector is access to the European market. This requires Ukraine to achieve inspection made by the experts of the European Commission SANCO, which is scheduled for late September-early October, 2014. Manufacturers expect the President sign the Law of Ukraine “ On Amendments to Certain Legislative Acts of Ukraine on Food Safety” adopted on July 22, 2014, which is a precondition for successful pass of the inspection",- reported Alina Zharko, Advisor on Agricultural Markets  of UCAB.
