Production of horticultural saplings increased by 40% over last 5 years

In the last 5 years the tendency of the increase in horticultural saplings production in Ukraine remains at the average annual level of 12-15%.

According to the Association "Ukrainian Agribusiness Club" (UCAB), in 2007 about 5.7 million horticultural saplings and about 1.3 million saplings of small-fruit crops were grown, whereas in 2011 the number was over 8 million of horticultural saplings and over 2 million saplings of small-fruit crops.

"We expect that in 2012/13 the production of horticultural saplings will grow by 15-18%, compared to 2011 – UCAB advisor on horticultural markets Igor Strelyuk says - because winter in 2012 was extremely severe and killed a large number of stone fruits, so the producers have to compensate for that. "

Ukraine has 75 nursery gardens of which the largest five grow about 60% of all saplings. The leader not only in Ukraine but also in Eastern Europe is the experimental farm of Artemivsk Horticulture Nursery Experimental Station of the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences of Ukraine. For the last five years the production increased by more than 2.5 times - in 2007 the farm grew about 300 000 saplings and today the annual number of grown saplings is more than 800,000.

"Our farm for many years specializes in growing planting material of horticultural, small-fruit and decorative crops. – says the Director of Institute of Horticulture of UAAS of Ukraine Igor Hrynyk - Our nursery gardens grow a virus-free planting material of horticultural crops, which is another step to improve quality and is a must in the increase of productivity and that allows to compete with foreign saplings."
