Growth rate of honey exports from Ukraine nearly doubled

During January-October 2014, Ukrainian enterprises exported 27,2 thousand tons of honey in the amount of US $ 70,9 million, while there were 16,7 thousand tons (US $40,6 million ) for the corresponding period the previous year. The main external markets for the Ukrainian honey became Germany, Poland and the United States. This was reported in the Association “Ukrainian Agribusiness Club” (UCAB).

Whereas honey production in Ukraine remains about the same level, domestic enterprises are soaring their exports. When producing this product in the amount of 74 thousand tons in 2009, only 7,3 thousand tons were sold to the external market, while even with a somewhat lower level of production in 2013 almost 22 thousand tons were taken abroad from Ukraine, of which 17,1 thousand tons (79%) were sold to the European Union.

Germany (44,9% of total exports), Poland (20,6% of total exports) and the US (11,9% of total exports) entered to the top three importers of the Ukrainian honey.

This year Ukraine received a quota for duty-free export of honey to the EU in the amount of 5 thousand tons which had been quickly used.

Experts emphasize that agricultural producer should pay more attention to niche products that, in particular, applies to honey the annual import of which to the EU reaches about 150 thousand tons to the amount of about US $ 1 billion (the data presented in 2013). Ukraine occupies the sixth place in the list of honey importers to the EU.

The main consumers of honey in the world are the EU (20-25% of world consumption), China (about 15%) and the USA (about 10%). Increasing of the production volumes is the main interest of producers (including Ukraine). In addition, Ukraine is considered as one of the world's suppliers of honey, especially, for the American and European markets. According to American experts, demand continues to outstrip supply - prices may go on rising,”- said the executive director of the Association “Ukrainian Agribusiness Club” Oleksandr Zhemoyda.
